Community Service at Bishop Luers
At Bishop Luers High School, we believe that serving others is a vital response to the Gospel call to love both God and neighbor. Through acts of service, we put our faith into action and live as witnesses of Christ’s love. In doing so, we become the Body of Christ in the world—bringing light, compassion, and hope to those around us.
Service is at the heart of who we are. Throughout the school year, our students, faculty, and staff come together to support those in need through ongoing partnerships with organizations including Community Harvest Food Bank and St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen.
One of our most beloved traditions is Friday Dress Down Days, where students can wear Luers Spirit Shirts and casual attire in exchange for a small donation—either a monetary gift or a canned food item. These simple weekly acts of generosity add up to make a meaningful difference for local families and individuals facing food insecurity.
Sodalitas
Sodalitas is a fellowship of students and adults at Bishop Luers High School dedicated to fulfilling the school’s mission of serving one another and the broader community. Through the development, planning, and execution of service projects, Sodalitas inspires students to live out their faith in action. Our vision is to nurture a spirit of service and leadership rooted in discipleship to Jesus Christ. The program consists of approximately 30 student-led service groups, each with 15–20 members guided by peer and adult leaders. The name Sodalitas itself forms an acronym that defines our purpose: Serve Others with Dignity As we Love and grow in Integrity and Truth Academically and Spiritually.
Bishop Luers established the Sodalitas program to serve our community and to inspire in our students a lifelong commitment to helping others. By volunteering during their high school years, students develop the habits and compassion needed to continue serving those in need—many of whom are part of our own Bishop Luers family, friends, and neighbors. Every Luers student participates in Sodalitas, creating a powerful network of young volunteers who partner with established charitable organizations to make a meaningful impact. What makes our approach unique is that student Sodalitas leaders take the initiative to contact local charities and identify where help is needed most. Sodalitas is centered purely on service—not programming, fundraising, or mission trips—but on living out Christ’s example through humble acts of love and compassion.
Based on the national volunteer rate of $33.49 per hour, our Sodalitas service projects provided more than $20,535 in value to the community organizations we served. Each hour of service reflects our mission to live out the Gospel through love and action. By sharing the Luers Spirit with others, our students continue to shine as “The Light of the World.”
